Be The Change. Our students have been embracing this theme for our Fall Exhibition of Learning through policy development, studies of revolutions, composting, sustainable products, recyclable packaging design, and the power of identity and diversity in literature, to name a few. We are looking forward to seeing you on November 16th at 6:30 p.m. Bring the whole family for our celebration of learning through the eyes of our students!
In order to support students in making connections from what they are learning in the classroom to real-life application, we continue to provide opportunities for field trips and community partnerships. The month of November is going to fly by with all of our events! Keep checking parent square for permission slips and announcements.
Thank you to those of you who have volunteered to be a guest speaker to share about your profession or passion. This brings learning to life. Also, thank you to those of you who have connected us with community resources. Keep it up! As a community school, these connections deepen our learning community and make it fun for all of us.
On November 16th from 6:30-8:30pm, our IVA High students will be hosting our first Exhibition of Learning for the 2023-2024 school year. Students have been preparing for this exhibition all semester by learning new content, engaging with guest speakers, and creating unique products that demonstrate all they have learned.
The theme of this semester's exhibition is "Be the Change." All semester, students have been forming connections between themselves and their experiences, with each other, and with our greater Long Beach community. We invite you to experience these connections through interactive project exhibits and community booths. Join us for an exciting evening!
On Campus Highlight
Logic Field Trip to City Hall
In Logic, students explored how developing and engaging with arguments underlies change and community building. Students are working toward making policy proposals to IVA High administration to directly impact our community.
To enrich and deepen the connection between argument and community impact, Logic students were invited to tour Long Beach City Hall. They toured the council chamber and Mayor Rex Richardson’s office @rexrichardsonlb, took in the view from the mayors balcony, and engaged in discussion with policy makers on the problems facing Long Beach, the challenges to policy making, how argument underlies community change, and why one might choose to dedicate their time to public service.
Engineering: Environmental Sustainability & Water Filters
Students in Mr. Sallam's environmental sustainability class created a filtering device that tackled the three challenges of environmental sustainability: renewable energy, a lack of clean water, and a lack of affordable food. The challenge was to make the device with recyclable materials.
Students designed their filters using the engineering design process which involved obtaining data, making sure the filter addressed one of the above issues, and testing the filter to make adjustments or revisions. Students worked in groups to present their filters to the class, and offer feedback to each other. The class will be presenting their filters to the community at Exhibition of Learning!
