Special Resource Teacher Ollie Cigliano warms up tortillas for lunch in IVA High's backyard

Get to Know Us: Ollie Cigliano - Resource Specialist, Gardener, & Chef Extraordinaire

Few people can make a big impact in a short amount of time. Ollie Cigliano, who joined IVA High in February of 2024 as our Resource Specialist Program Teacher, has done just that. As a special education teacher, Ollie has expertly and compassionately supported our students with diverse needs. But perhaps it's outside the 4 walls of the classroom that Ollie’s impact has been most visible. Her love of gardening, great food and sharing that passion with our students has not only transformed our courtyard into a thriving garden, but also tuned our hearts and stomachs to delicious homegrown and homemade meals. Get to know Ollie, in her own words, below.

Tell us about your background and how that prepared you for your role at IVA High.

I have an extensive background in special education, with a focus on individualized learning strategies and support for students with diverse needs including ELL (English Language Learners) and students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders). My experience includes working in various educational settings, where I developed skills in curriculum adaptation, student assessment, and collaborative teaching. This background has prepared me well for my role at IVA High, allowing me to effectively support and guide students in the Resource Specialist Program, ensuring they achieve their full potential.

Share a favorite memory of your work at IVA High.

One of my favorite memories at IVA High is the moment when one of my students, who had been struggling with confidence and academic challenges, successfully participated in a frog dissection project during Science. Seeing the pride and excitement on her face, as well as the encouragement from her peers, was incredibly rewarding. It was a powerful reminder of the impact that personalized support and a nurturing environment can have on a student's growth and self-esteem.

Tell us a bit about you.

I am a proud and independent Italiana, born and raised in LB with roots in Ischia (Italy). I am trilingual and love to practice Spanish and Italian. I have a loving role in my family as a daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, and sister-friend to many. I enjoy an active lifestyle, which includes swimming, paddle boarding, and spending quality time outdoors. I have a passion for cooking Italian food at home and love exploring Japanese, Mexican, and many other cuisines when dining out to inspire me to make new things. I work as a private chef and host an Airbnb Bed & Breakfast on the peninsula in Long Beach. I grow most of the vegetables, herbs and flowers that I use from my plot at the LB Community Gardens. My dog is from the SpCALA, Pepe Nero (“black pepper” in Italian) and I make the most of our time together, embracing both adventure and relaxation.
